Is 1-to-1 Acting Coaching Worth It? When Private Lessons Can Make a Difference
There are things you can learn in a group acting class, and other things that become much easier when somebody can focus entirely on your work.
That's where 1-to-1 acting coaching comes in.
It isn't something every actor needs every week. But if you've got an important audition coming up, you keep getting stuck at the same point in a scene or you're unsure whether your material actually suits you, a focused session can be incredibly useful.
The important part is having something specific you want to get out of it.
What actually happens in a private acting lesson?
A good session shouldn't just be you performing a monologue while a tutor tells you whether it was good.
You should leave understanding what changed, why it changed and what you can work on independently afterwards.
At ReAct Theatre Co., 1-to-1 acting coaching is tailored to the actor. You might spend an hour looking at the circumstances behind a classical speech, preparing a drama-school interview or rehearsing sides for a screen casting.
Some sessions are about very practical problems. Perhaps you're trying to make a self-tape feel less theatrical. Perhaps you're good at learning lines but struggle to listen and react. Perhaps you're confident when rehearsing alone and go blank when someone asks you to do something different.
Those are all useful places to begin.
Specific feedback beats general encouragement
Imagine you've prepared a monologue for weeks. You know the words, you've chosen your pauses and you're happy with how it sounds.
Then somebody asks, 'Who are you actually talking to, and what do you need from them?'
You realise you've thought about making the speech impressive but not about why your character needs to say it now.
Try asking yourself that question. Then choose one active objective: to persuade, reassure, provoke, conceal or win somebody back. Perform the speech again, concentrating only on getting that result.
A good coach can help you recognise when the performance stops being a series of planned effects and starts feeling like a genuine attempt to affect another person.
When is private coaching particularly useful?
Before a drama-school audition. You can check that your material suits the school's requirements, practise redirection and make sure you understand the complete play.
When you're stuck with a monologue. A tutor who hasn't been rehearsing the speech for the past month may notice habits you've stopped seeing.
Before a professional casting. You can explore the scene, clarify the character's situation and get used to making choices quickly.
When your confidence has taken a knock. A supportive, practical session can help you reconnect with the work rather than focusing only on the outcome of the last audition.
What should I bring to my first acting coaching session?
Bring material, even if it isn't finished. A script and a question are enough to start.
If it's a monologue, read the entire play first. Make a note of anything you don't understand, and tell the tutor what you've already tried. If it's a casting, bring the instructions as well as the sides.
Don't spend the session pretending you've got everything under control. You're paying for help, not trying to impress your coach.
At the end, ask for one or two precise things to practise. That makes the lesson useful after you've left the room.
Private coaching or a weekly acting class?
Ideally, they support each other.
Private coaching helps you address an individual problem. Group classes let you experiment in front of other people, work alongside fellow actors and develop steadily over time.
If you're applying to drama school, it may make more sense to train weekly and add private sessions when you have a particular piece or audition to prepare. Our Wednesday drama-school class in Islington includes regular individual mentoring alongside group work.
There's no need to book the most expensive route just because you're taking acting seriously. Choose the kind of help that suits your current goal.
